A Qualified Right

Imagine this. You have a dog. You love your dog to pieces but he gets ill. So you take him to the vet and the receptionist says "We have two vets you can see today. One is Mr Smith who went to veterinary school and passed all his exams and has been practicing for around 2 years now. Or we have Mr Jones, who used to be a lorry driver, but decided yesterday he wants to be a vet, so he's just winging it really. Who would you like to see?" It's probably just a no-brainer really. While experience comes with the job, and you have to do the job to gain the experience, going through the correct training is vital for most lines of work.

So why should you care if your pole/aerial instructor is qualified? A qualification is much more than a piece of paper. A qualification shows your instructor knows what they are doing and can assist you correctly. It should be a piece of mind and reassurance to help you train safe.

So what are the qualifications you should be looking for and what do they mean?

Launched in 2002, REPs is an independent, public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. REPs provides a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards. REPs provides assurance and confidence to the public and employers that all professionals on the Register are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform their role effectively. REPs was developed to protect the public from ‘cowboy trainers’ who do not hold appropriate qualifications. As well as protecting the public, REPs was also established to recognise the qualifications and skills of exercise professionals. (source: www.exerciseregister.org) So in essence, REPS provides the public with a guarantee that fitness professionals on its books meet required standards and possess acceptable qualifications.

It is also advisable to check if your instructor has first aid qualifications just in case of an emergency. It's no good relying on yourself or another student in case you or they are absent or even the ones who get injured!
